Daily Drive

This is the view on my way to and from our home. This beautiful little wooded road leads directly to Buttonwood Drive. It lasts for only one tenth of a mile but while it lasts, it really has the feel of a small, country lane.

And I suppose it is, really. I have seen this lane host mothers pushing strollers, fathers pulling toddlers in wagons, helmeted children riding bicycles, squirrels, blue jays, a raccoon, and as many as 30 deer at once.

But just behind where I stood when I snapped this photo is a post office and a veterinary clinic, a chain link fence, and all the traffic and noises that come with Jollyville Road and just further, Highway 183.

Still, every day when I'm on this road, I like to think just for a minute that I live in the country where the air is clean and there is still nature in the outdoors, where old men in trucks wave as they pass you by and old ladies still offer pie and coffee after dinner; where, through rose-colored glasses, the world is a little simpler and seems to be a happier place.

And then I turn on Jollyville Road where I am even more thrilled to be only ten minutes away from my workplace, the grocery store, the hospital, the Arboretum, Starbucks, Theresa's house, Barbara's house, Dipu's house, and all the other wonderful, modern conveniences situated so near to where we live. I don't go to all these places every day and some of them, not nearly often enough, but it's very good to know they are close by. I've got the best of both worlds.

Yay! I got a shoutout!
Your lane is beautiful. I would walk it as often as possible.

Take it from me, living near those conveniences is totally worth it. I used to have to drive 40 miles to go to a decent store. Now I have them 2 blocks away. I was sad to lose our old quiet, quaint neighborhood, but I'm over it now. What a beautiful photo!

That picture is gorgeous and makes it look like you live in the woods or something! You live in the ideal location to me, really. I loved when we lived in that apartment right there because it was easy access to everything but not in the MIDDLE of everything.

Sigh...I miss Austin...

What a great shot! You're becoming quite the photographer. Great article, too. It's amazing to me how you can write about something so "everyday" and make it sound so special. Terrific!
